Quote “They Shot Him” pg 235

When Atticus said this to Calpurnia he was very angry that they had killed Tom. He asked Calpurnia to go to Helen Robinson’s house. He wanted to go visit her because he felt bad at what had happened. I think that Atticus felt bad because he had tried very hard to win the case. He is not racist and he feels that racism is bad. I think that Atticus thinks that Tom Robinson is a victim of racism.

I don’t think Tom Robinson should have been shot. If it was a white man, the jury would have convicted him and they wouldn’t have shot him 17 times. A white man would have been proven innocent and be free.

Initial Post Ch. 20-25

In chapter 20, I agree with Atticus that Mayella is only lying about being raped because she is ashamed because she got caught. I think that she was scared that everyone would hate her and harass her for what she had tried to do. She was under a lot of pressure and she made a stupid decision. She did not have the evidence to prove that she was raped.

I would have done the same thing that Jem and Scout were doing. I think that they were just curious to finding out what was going to happen to Tom Robinson. I think that it is very wrong that they ruled Tom Robinson guilty. I think that it is very wrong because they convicted him because he was black. He did not do anything wrong, he just did what the normal black person would do.

I think that Tom Robinson did the right thing in trying to run. I think that he would have no chance of surviving in the racist world he lived in. I think that Tom Robinson was a sad victim of racism and was treated very unfairly. I felt bad that he died because he had a family and kids to raise.

Song (Ch. 21-25)

“Like you’ll Never See me again” by Alicia Keys

This is the song I chose for this section.  There were some events that occurred in this section that were unfortunate.  The incident where Tom Robinson got shot 17 times was one of those events.  It was such a tragic thing to see someone go like that.  He was always getting blamed for something that he didn’t do.  He got shot when he was trying to escape from prison.  Atticus did his best to try and protect him from being accused, but it was no good.  I can understand why he tried to escape prison, but he should’ve just been patient.

Unfairness (Ch. 21-25)

This case has been going on for a while now.  It was probably because all the evidence each side has provided.  The Tom Robinson case has been determined right from the beginning.  Tom Robinson was declared guilty by the jury.  It wasn’t because Atticus didn’t provide enough evidence; it was because Tom was an African American.  The jury didn’t like the kind of people Tom was.  The court system back then wasn’t fully developed and still had lots of room for improvement.  The system was bias on which side they voted for.  It was only based on a person’s background or ethnicity not the facts and evidence.

I thought maybe this case was going to be different from the other cases.  I thought Atticus was going to finally be able to defend an African American.  Atticus did not win the case.  It was very disappointing to him and his family.  Scout and Jem were talking about getting new people to be on the jury, but it wasn’t going to happen.  Women were thought to just stay home and watch over the house while the men would go to the court.  Things weren’t very fair back then.  I am glad that I didn’t have to live in times like those.

Picture(21-25)

This picture is showing Jem’s growing up further. he got his first chest hair and he is thinking of trying out for the football team. Jem also got his youth stripped from him when he heard the verdict from the court. He stopped believing there was so much good in the world. He has begun to join the adult world. He is thinking before doing like when Scout was going to squish the roly-poly, Jem told her that the bug never did anything to her and that it has no reason to be killed. Jem and Scout’s distance in age is becoming larger and larger as the days go on.

Hypocrisy (21-25)

Tom Robinson’s death wasn’t fair. Yet, my biggest problem is that the Maycomb was completely against him up until this point in the novel. They all saw him as guilty, (except for the small minority who was on his side), just for being a black male in this small racist town. After his death, the whole town all saw the death of Tom Robison, as not fair which, to me is hypocritical. I believe the people should have thought of it like this in the first place then he wouldn’t have been in such a hard situation and have to be his choices be stuck to the following: escape, wait for the electric chair, or wait for a small chance to get out. I think he was happier dying from gunshot instead of the electric chair. When you think about it the human body is all electricity and it just was too harsh of a punishment. I don’t feel that the town had a right to be so hateful for the fact he was black. If a white male raped a black woman they would believe the male. Hypocrisy is just wrong and the courtroom should have been listening to their voices not paying attention to their skin tone.

Quote(17-20)

Atticus,”Sherlock Holmes and Jem Finch would agree”.

When Atticus was questioning Mr. Ewell he asked him to write his name. Atticus noticed that he was left handed. Mayella was beaten on the right side of her face. Atticus told Mr. Ewell that he could have beaten Mayella because a left handed person is most likely to hit a person in the right side of the face. Atticus told Mr. Ewell, ” Sherlock Holmes and Jem Finch would agree”. Atticus said this to Mr. Ewell and the rest of the court room to show that what he was saying was true. Some of the best lawyers like Sherlock Holmes would agree with what he is saying to Mr. Ewell.

This quote shows that Atticus is a very good lawyer and he knows what he is doing. Another thing that shows that Atticus is a very good lawyer is that he never asks a question without knowing the answer first. He always knows the answer first, because if he gets an unexpected answer it could throw off the case and make him lose.

It Wasn’t Me (Ch. 17-20)

I picked this song to represent this part of the book.  In this section, the main point was when they are in court.  Things were getting pretty heated with all the questioning and evidence being provided.  I picked this song because we know that Tom Robinson didn’t rape her.  It wasn’t him.  He was being framed by the Ewells.  Tom Robinson is a good person at heart; he just might not seem it because he is colored.  I’m sure if he wasn’t colored, he wouldn’t have to be going through all this right now.  Hopefully Tom Robinson will be set free.

Ch. 17-20

I was suprised that Ewell blamed Tom Robinson raped Ewells daughter. I think that rape is wrong and it is a violation of rights to a human being, but I think that Tom Robinson is being picked on because he is black. I think that this is also wrong. I agree with what Atticus said at the end of the trial.I think that Mayella should have said anything wrong about Tom Robinson. I think that Atticus is a very good lawyer in proving Mayella wrong. He said that the bruises on her face couldn’t have been from Tom Robinson because he lost his left hand when he was young. I think that it is wrong that Mayella is picking on Tom Robinson because he is African American. I think that Tom is a very good person and he isn’t guilty of anything. I think that he proved it in chapter 19 when his employer stands up and defends him.

Court (Ch. 17-20)

Atticus is evolving more and more as the story progresses.  He is shocking Scout and Jem with actions he has never done before.  Atticus loosened his clothes for the first time ever.  He would only loosen his clothes when he was going to bed, but now he is doing it while he was in the courtroom.  Atticus finally started to sweat for the first time ever.  He never has before until the Tom Robinson case.  Being a lawyer can be very stressful for the body.  It also brings out a new side to a person.

This is the first time we actually get to see Atticus defending a client in the courtroom. Who knew Atticus could be such a good lawyer.  I thought he was going to be good but not as good.  He knew exactly what questions to ask and how to present himself.  He was very professional.  It didn’t say for sure, but I think Atticus will win the case.  He had the evidence with him to prove that Tom Robinson was framed and he didn’t do anything.  If I was ever in trouble and needed a lawyer, I think I would want Atticus to be defending me.
